TINA G. RUBIN
MFA
Author, editor, book coach
Hi. I got my start in publishing with the L.A. Times Sunday magazine, covering the globe writing architecture, garden, and lifestyle features, then expanding into regional and national magazines. Today I specialize in health and wellness, medicine, business, spirituality, and travel. I’ve written six business books on cities and states, produced content for clients such as Keck Medicine of USC and Better Nutrition magazine, and worked as a writer/editor at a national trade newspaper and two Los Angeles publishing houses. I hold an MFA in creative writing from Antioch University and recently completed my memoir, LIFTOFF, coming soon!
Current project
LIFTOFF, my 96,600-word memoir, opens in my father’s private airplane when I was 10. I was the only one in our family who liked to fly, so he and I bonded in the Pennsylvania skies on Sunday afternoons. I thought he was the world’s best dad—affectionate, attentive, fun—but all that time, he was teaching me that girls didn't count. I loved him, so I believed him.
This is the story of how I found my voice in the face of my father’s blatant affair with his young bookkeeper, who thought I was the competition; a mother who tuned us all out by escaping into musical theater; and a photographer husband with whom I shared romantic romps across the globe but who proved to be more controlling than my father.
Woven throughout is my lifelong dance with the divine mysteries that haunt us. A sense of connection to something grand whispered in my ear since childhood, growing into the awakening that finally led me to stand up for my life. Each of us has the power to change our mind. And when we do, life responds.
